🏆 Can you buy an Oscar?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences goes to great lengths to ensure that the Academy Awards represent the absolute best in filmmaking—regardless of production budget or box office sales. But do the Academy Awards always represent a level of recognition that money can't buy? More often than not, yes. Since 1990, on only four occasions (13.8%) was the film selected for Best Picture also the nominee with the highest production budget, according to data from the film statistics website, The Numbers.

More often than not, yes. Since 1990, on only four occasions (13.8%) was the film selected for Best Picture also the nominee with the highest production budget, according to data from the film statistics website, The Numbers. The big-spending Best Picture's include:
  • The Departed (2007)
  • Gladiator (2001)
  • Titanic (1998)
  • Forrest Gump (1995)

And how about this year? Green Book took the prize last night on a budget of only $23MM—well below the $53MM average that was boosted by this year's highest-budget film, Black Panther.

These are examples of Statistics, a vital skill set for collecting, interpreting and communicating data that you'll learn all about in our new course released today.

You'll practice finding the mean, median, and mode of a dataset by exploring real-life questions such as, "How old is an artist when they are at the peak of their creativity?" or "Are you significantly taller than the average person on OkCupid?" We teach you how to calculate and interpret several descriptive statistics similar to these examples throughout our new course.

Finally, we'll teach you how to visualize statistics by creating a histogram of a dataset. By the end of this course, you should have an understanding of how to analyze and describe complex datasets.
